I Heart America Celebration
Spend the Fourth at Wolf Pen Creek
There's a particular kind of July evening in College Station — the heat finally easing off, the amphitheater lawn filling up with blankets, the smell of food drifting over from the vendors. That's the backdrop for I Heart America, the city's free Fourth of July celebration at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater on Saturday, July 4.
This year carries some extra weight. The celebration ties into America 250, marking the country's 250th birthday, and the music matches the occasion. Josh Abbott Band takes the stage as the headliner — seven albums deep, three RIAA Gold singles and a live show that has earned them a national following without ever drifting from their independent Texas roots. It's the kind of set that sounds right under an open sky on the Fourth.
Come hungry. Gates open at 7 p.m., and the first stretch of the night comes with free watermelon and sausages on a stick while they last, plus food vendors if you want more. There's room for the kids to roam with family activities throughout the grounds, so you can settle in, claim your spot and enjoy an evening or red, white and wow.
Then the lights drop. At 9:30 p.m., the fireworks go up over the amphitheater, timed to a patriotic soundtrack — the part of the night everyone stays for.
The rundown:
- Gates open: 7 p.m.
- Welcome remarks: 7:30 p.m.
- Concert (Josh Abbott Band): 8 p.m.
- Fireworks: 9:30 p.m.
Before you head out: Parking is free at Post Oak Mall, with accessible spots near Colgate Drive. Bring lawn chairs (just not into the blanket-only areas) and a cooler (48 quarts or smaller) — no glass or kegs. Leave the pets, tents, canopies and personal fireworks at home so everyone has a clear view.
Admission is free. Bring the family, find a patch of grass and stick around for the show.
