Afrofuturism Explored! 2026
Overview
Afrofuturism Explored! is an annual event coinciding with Black History Month celebrations that provides a platform for discourse surrounding the topic of Afrofuturism - a creative movement celebrating the intersection between African diasporic culture and technology. Afrofuturism spans from science fiction literature to visual arts to music, film, dance, theatre, and beyond, all housing a variety of social commentary and artistic expression. Afrofuturism is a movement expressing hopefulness in the face of unrest, solidarity via joint experimentation, and adding a new voice in a landscape of expanding academics, specifically to African/African diaspora artists and scholars, and invites new waves of commentary, expression, and contemporary engagement with a variety of humanities, not only embracing the arts in all forms, but also anthropology, ethnomusicology, global language and cultural studies, historical studies, and much more. This year’s keynote guests include Afrofuturist scholar Dr. Tav N’Yongo (Yale), and dancer/choreographer Everitt Perry (TAMU).
