Liberty Bell Replica at James A. Baker, III Pavilion

Overview

In 1950, the U.S. Treasury commissioned 55 full-size Liberty Bell replicas and sent one to every state, territory and the District of Columbia. Most were installed in state capitols. Texas Gov. Allan Shivers chose Texas A&M University instead, pointing to the university's military heritage and the thousands of Aggies who served and died in two World Wars. The one-ton bell was presented on campus July 5, 1950, and has hung in the Academic Building rotunda ever since. While that building undergoes exterior restoration, the Texas Liberty Bell is on display at the James A. Baker, III Pavilion at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, free to see during regular Pavilion hours.
